Mount Meru

Description

Located 70 km west of Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru offers valuable acclimatization before a Kilimanjaro attempt, with stunning scenery despite its lower summit.

Mount Meru’s moods vary, from winter snow on the summit to sunny weather for most of the year. The Crater wall ruptured 250,000 years ago, impacting the surroundings.

Vegetation zones range from lush evergreen forest at 1800m to an alpine desert at 3400m. Along the way, you may encounter wildlife, with the sound of the wind and white-necked ravens in the high desert.

Please take note that the hotel cost covers breakfast exclusively. The check-in process commences at 2:00 PM.

Depart at 8:30 am for Arusha National Park from Momella Gate (1500 m). The trail starts with game viewing in open grassland where you can spot Buffalo, Warthog, Zebra, etc.

Afterward, there’s a steady climb through montane forest with lunch at the famous fig tree. Continue through dense forest, rich in birds and monkeys, including white and black colobus. Visit Njeku, Kitoto viewpoints, and Mayo Falls. In the afternoon, get closer views of the towering cliffs and Ash cone. Reach Miriakamba hut (2,514 m) in 5-6 hours, ascending 1,014 m, to enjoy the sunset and scenic views.

Depart at 8:00 am for Saddle Hut. The hike from Miriakamba Hut to the saddle below Little Meru is a steep but short day.

Starting in lush montane forest, the path goes through Elephant Ridge, then climbs through heather and moorland to reach Saddle Hut (3,570m) for lunch. Afterward, enjoy free time for rest and views of the ridge curving up to the summit.

Energetic hikers can make a short climb to Little Meru (3,820m) for superb crater views. This 1.5-hour round trip is less exposed and offers vistas of Kenya, Maasai hills, Ngorongoro highlands, Ol Doinyo Lengai, and Mount Kilimanjaro. The ascent is 1,056 m.

An early start at around 01:00 hours to climb steeply to Rhino point (3,800 m) the path continue along an undulating ridge of ash and rock to reach Cobra point (4,350 m).The summit of socialist peak (4,566 m) is an hour more on a superb but steep path, the views at the summit are stunning at sunrise, the Kilimanjaro floating on the morning clouds, the rift valley if the weather is clear, Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Maasai land and Arusha town. It takes 5-6 hours.

The route back to Saddle hut in the sharp morning light along a narrow ridge between the sloping outer wall of the crater and the sheer cliffs of the inner wall is one of the most dramatic and exhilarating walks in Africa. It takes 3 hours to Saddle hut.

Take a little rest and have your lunch before descending further to Miriakamba hut for overnight. It takes 2 hours.

Depart Miriakamba at 8:00 am after breakfast for a rapid descent through grassland and mixed forest (Northern route). Enjoy wildlife sightings and views of Ngurudoto crater and the park plains, plus a visit to Tululusia Falls, hidden nearby.
