Rongai Route

Description

The Rongai route starts on Mount Kilimanjaro‘s northeastern side near the Kenyan border. Its remote location means it’s less crowded than other routes, offering a pristine wilderness experience. It’s flatter but lacks the advantage of high-altitude acclimatization. Typically a 6-day trek (recommended for acclimatization), covering 74.5 km, it shares the summit path with the Marangu route. The Rongai ascends from the north and descends via the Marangu on the southeast, offering remoteness and less traffic. Mega Adventures suggests it for lessexperienced climbers seeking a quieter hike. Main difference between 6 and 7 days Rongai route: The 7-day version includes an acclimatization day at Mawenzi Tarn hut.

Your guide will meet and greet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and after a short briefing he will drive you to your hotel in Moshi.

Please take note that the hotel cost covers breakfast exclusively. The check-in process commences at 2:00 PM.

After breakfast, your guide will pick you up for a 3-hour drive to Rongai Gate, located approximately 3 hours from Moshi town. Upon arrival, your guide will handle the climbing permit, and park authorities will conduct a porter weight check. Meanwhile, our chef will prepare an early lunch for you to enjoy while exploring this beautiful starting point. Once the permits are cleared and lunch is served, we’ll begin our hike through Mount Kilimanjaro’s lush rainforest. When we reach Simba Camp, our mountain crew will set up tents and our chef will prepare dinner for the evening as you prepare for tomorrow’s trek.

After breakfast depart for Kikelewa Camp, leaving the rain forest and trekking through moorland, we will break for lunch at Simba Cave 3450 amsl and later on proceed to Kikelewa.

After a long trek you can rest and enjoy a warm dinner.

After breakfast we will embark to a short but yet steep trek. As we are leaving the moorland we enter the alpine desert and the altitude is now high, which means a steady pace and frequently drinking water is important. Upon arrival at Mawenzi Tarn Hut you can relax and explore the area. Later in the evening our chef will serve you a warm dinner.

After an early breakfast depart for Kibo Hut, which is our base camp. Upon arrival at Kibo Hut, take a well-deserved rest while our chef prepare an early dinner. Make sure to get enough rest this day to prepare for the summit day.

At an early start around 01:00 hours begin the steep and altitude challenging climb to the great summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Our trained team will make hold the best pace for the most mentally and physically and last ascend while making sure to measure your oxygen level throughout the trek and help you reach the ultimate goal, Uhuru Peak. After successfully reaching “the rooftop of Africa”, enjoy the breathtaking view before descending to back to Kibo base camp for breakfast and a short rest and further hike down to Horombo Hut.

Later in the evening we will enjoy our last evening on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.

After breakfast depart for Marangu gate. The longest trek of this mountain challenge lies ahead though the trek is mostly downhill making this day challenging physically but not altitude wise. The trek will be 19 km through the rain forest for approximately 5-7 hours.

Upon arrival at the park headquarters at Marangu Gate we will collect our summit certificate, celebrate and our team will be ready to transfer you to your hotel in Moshi.

Relax at the hotel and then proceed to the airport.

Please be aware that hotel check-out is scheduled for 11:00 AM. Should your flight be in the evening and you require a late check-out, you have the choice to extend your hotel stay until 6:00 PM for an additional fee.
