Nestled in the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro lies the beautiful village of Materuni. Home to the Chagga tribe and famous for the tremendous 80-meter tall Materuni Waterfall and its aromatic, rich coffee. Its a beautiful setting and on a clear day, you will have spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Firstly you will take a short hike to Materuni Waterfall, locally known as Nambe Waterfall. Nambe means ‘first born’ and the waterfall got this name as it is the first waterfall that comes from the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. At the end of this magnificent waterfall lies a tranquillity pool, where you can take a dip after the hike. So a swim suit can come in handy!

Next you will walk to local coffee growers where you will experience process of a coffee bean turning into a delicious freshly brewed coffee. After the coffee tour you will be treated with a traditional chagga lunch.

Your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Moshi at 9:30 am and head to Materuni village. Upon arrival, you will register at the village office and your hike to Materuni waterfall will begin. An easy walk takin approximately 40 minutes. Your guide will tell you about the culture of the chagga tribe, village life and the flora fauna in these beautiful vibrantly green and lush surroundings.

After having enjoyed a good time at the waterfall and maybe a dip in the pool you’ll head further to the coffee plantation. Here the local farmers will take you through the entire process of turning a coffee bean into a freshly brewed Materuni coffee in the local chagga way. You will also have the option of helping in the process, which is traditionally accompanied by chagga songs and dancing.
After a tasty cup of coffee you can enjoy a traditional local lunch in the beautiful scenery, before you depart back to Moshi.
